Description Cytogenetic analysis of cells from effusions or cerebrospinal fluid to assess for the presence of neoplastic clones.
Specimen Requirements

Preferred Collection Volume 4-5 mL
Minimum Collection Volume
Collection Instructions At least 4-5 mL (up to 1 liter) aseptically collected fluid/effusion in a sterile container or syringe.
Specimen Handling Deliver to lab at room temperature within 24 hours. If collected over a weekend, call the laboratory to make arrangements for specimen delivery. May be refrigerated if not transported Immediately. Do not freeze. Protect from heat or cold.
Rejection Criteria Frozen, fixed, clotted or grossly contaminated specimens. Specimens older than 24 hours.
Methodology A direct harvest or harvest after overnight culture, followed by G­ bandlng with trypsin-Wright stain. Twenty metaphase cells are fully analyzed and at least two are karyotyped.
