Specimen Requirements 
Container Lavender (EDTA) collection tube
Specimen Type Lavender (EDTA) or pink (K2EDTA)
Preferred Collection Volume 5 mL
Minimum Collection Volume 2.5 mL
Collection Instructions For optimum results, should be drawn just prior to or at the onset of chills. Submit to lab immediately.
Patient's travel history and history of anti-malarial treatment/prophylaxis is necessary to aid in test interpretation.
Specimen Handling Stability (collection to initiation of testing): ambient: 1 hour; refrigerated: unacceptable; frozen: unacceptable. Transport 5mL whole blood. Extended exposure to EDTA anticoagulants can result in altered parasite morphology.
Rejection Criteria Tubes other than EDTA and K2EDTA.
Methodology Qualitative microscopy stain.
