Description Gold standard test for diagnosing the presence of mycobacterial organisms.
Specimen Requirements 
Container Sterile plastic container (leakproof) 2-8 C.
Specimen Type Collect one of the following: Sputum, CSF, urine, body fluid, tissue, gastric aspirate, or stool.
Preferred Collection Volume Sputum: 10-15 mL; CSF: 5 mL; urine >/= 40mL; body fluid: >/= 5 mL; tissue: 1 gram: gastric aspirate: 5-10mL.
Minimum Collection Volume Sputum: 1 mL; CSF: 1 mL; urine 10 mL; body fluid: 1 mL; tissue visible; gastric aspirate: 1 mL.
Collection Instructions Collection of early morning specimens of urine and sputum. 1 Sputum per 24 hrs. Collection of 3 morning sputum samples with >24hrs in between optimal.
Specimen Handling Stability (collection to initiation of testing): Ambient: 24 hrs; refrigerated: 1 week; frozen: 1 week.
Rejection Criteria Dry material or material collected and transported on a swab.

Reference Range Culture negative for acid fast bacilli.
