Description Diagnosis Yersinia- associated diarrhea in patients with appropriate exposure history or risk factors.
Specimen Requirements 
Container Sterile plastic container, enteric transport media, or rectal swab
Specimen Type Stool
Preferred Collection Volume 5 grams or 10 mL
Minimum Collection Volume 1 gram or 5 mL
Collection Instructions Place stool in enteric transport media.
Specimen Handling Transport rectal swab or stool in enteric transport media. If transport is delayed refrigerate at 2-8C. Unpreserved: ambient: 2 hrs; refrigerated: unacceptable; frozen: unacceptable; preserved: ambient:4 days; refrigerated: 4 days; frozen: unacceptable.
Rejection Criteria Nonsterile or leaking containers, multiple specimens (more than one in 24 hrs), dry specimens, delayed transport without the use of appropriate preservative.

Notes Test is not routinely performed on inpatients after 3 days of admission. New onset of diarrheal illness in such patients is most likely due to other causes, including Clostridium difficile infection.
