Components
Synonyms Culture, Urine.
Description Quantitative culture to identify bacterial causes of urinary tract infections.
Specimen Requirements 
Container Sterile plastic container, urine transport tube with boric acid.
Specimen Type Midstream urine, catheter, cystoscopic, or suprapubic urines.
Preferred Collection Volume 5 - 10 mL unpreserved urine, urine transport tube: filled to appropriate line.
Minimum Collection Volume Unpreserved urine: 1 mL
Collection Instructions Source is required.
Specimen Handling Transport unpreserved urine to Microbiology within 2 hrs of collection at 2-8C. Boric acid transport tube at 20-25C. Stability (collection to initiation of testing): ambient: 2 hrs, (boric acid tube: ambient: 48 hrs); refrigerated: 24 hrs; frozen: unacceptable.
Rejection Criteria Nonsterile or leaking containers, multiple specimens (more than one in 24 hrs), 24-hr pooled specimens, delayed transport to the lab(> 2 hrs at 20-25C or > than 24 hrs at 2-8C), urine from catheter bag, foley catheter tips, syringe with needle attached.
