Specimen Requirements 
Container Aerobic swab no media (Cepheid collection swab only) Contact Microbiology for supplies.

Collection Instructions Collect nasal swab ONLY.
1. Insert dry swabs approximately 1 to 2 cm into each nostril and rotate against the inside of the nostril for 3 seconds.
2. Apply slight pressure with a finger on the outside of the nose to help ensure good contact between the swab and the inside of the nose.
3. Using the same swabs, repeat for the second nostril, trying not to touch anything but the inside of the nose.
4. Place the swabs into the plastic transport tube.
Specimen Handling Transport nasal swab immediately to Microbiology. Swab may be stored at 15 to 30 C if it will be transported to Microbiology within 24 hours. If transport is delayed keep at 2-8C. Stability (collection to initiation of testing): ambient: 24 hrs; refrigerated: 5 days; frozen: unacceptable.
Rejection Criteria Delayed transport. Sample received refrigerated > 5 days. Non-nasal samples.
