Container Sterile plastic container (leakproof)
Specimen Type Sputum, tracheal aspirates or a deep throat swab from cystic fibrosis patients
Preferred Collection Volume 5mL
Minimum Collection Volume 1 mL
Collection Instructions Expectorated or induced sputum; tracheal aspirates. Stability (collection to initiation of testing): ambient 2 hours; refrigerated: 24 hours; frozen: unacceptable.
Specimen Handling Transport immediately to Microbiology.
Rejection Criteria Nonsterile or leaking containers, multiple specimens (more than one in 24 hrs), Frozen: unacceptable.
