Description
Specimen Requirements 
Container Bacterial swab, capped syringe (without needle), sterile plastic container. Aspirate fluid in sterile capped syringe; purulent material in sterile tube, or swab in bacterial transport media at 20-25°C.
Specimen Type Aspirate or purulent material is preferable to a swab.

Collection Instructions Source of specimen is required.

Specimen Handling Refrigerated specimens are not recommended for recovery of some fastidious organisms such as Neisseria spp.
Rejection Criteria Nonsterile or leaking containers, dry materials, dry swabs, and syringes with needle attached.
