Description Screening culture to identify vancomycin-resistant-enterococci (VRE bacteria).
Specimen Requirements 
Container Swab or stool in bacterial transport media at 2-8°C.
Specimen Type Rectal swab for surveillance cultures.
Preferred Collection Volume 1 swab
Minimum Collection Volume 1 swab
Collection Instructions Collect stool preserved in enteric transport media immediately. Transport unpreserved, fresh stool to Microbiology within 2 hrs of collection. Collect one sample per day.
Specimen Handling Stability (collection to initiation of testing): ambient: swabs: 24 hrs; refrigerated in transport media: 2 days; frozen: unacceptable
Rejection Criteria Nonsterile or leaking containers, or dry swabs.
Methodology Culture/Identification
Reference Range Culture negative for vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus.
CPT Code(s) 87081 presumptive identification. If definitive identification required, add 87077.
