Description Identify potential bacterial cause of pneumonia.
Specimen Requirements 
Container Sterile plastic container
Specimen Type Sputum, tracheal aspirate, or gastric aspirate (neonates). Source of specimen is required.
Preferred Collection Volume 5 mL
Minimum Collection Volume 1 mL
Collection Instructions Collect sputum in a sterile, leak-proof container at 2-8C. Place each specimen in a separate, individually sealed bag.
Specimen Handling Stability (collection to initiation of testing): ambient: 2 hrs; refrigerated: 24 hrs; frozen: unacceptable.
Rejection Criteria Swabs; Nonsterile or leaking containers, multiple specimens (more than one in 24 hrs), dry specimens, poor quality sputum (presence of greater than 10 squamous epithethial cells per low power field).
