Synonyms
Description For all specimens that are not pap smears that require cytology.
Specimen Requirements 
Container Plastic container
Specimen Type Body fluid, CSF, sputum, urine, BAL, bronchial brushing, cyst fluid
Preferred Collection Volume 50 ml to 100 ml for most body fluids, except for CSFs, 20 ml to 50 ml for urine specimens.
Minimum Collection Volume 20 ml except for CSFs
Collection Instructions For body fluids, cavity washings, cerebrospinal fluids (CSFs), bronchial alveolar lavages (BALs), and sputum: fresh specimen is required.

For urine specimens, such as bladder washings, voided urines, and catherized urine: submit sample in equal amounts of 50% alcohol.

For fine needle aspirations and brushing: submit specimen in either formalin or cytolyt.
Specimen Handling Must be received in cytology laboratory within 1 hour of collection for proper processing.
Rejection Criteria Clotted specimen, visible contamination on the outside of the container, improperly labeled specimen (missing two unique patient identifiers, specimen not labeled with source or part type, discrepant information on container and requisition), and/or missing requisition.
